The two Marriott Bonvoy Amex cards
The two Marriott Bonvoy Amex cards

The Marriott Bonvoy credit cards from American Express are now live and accepting applications. Both the personal and business cards have been re-branded with the new name for Marriott and SPG’s merged loyalty program – Bonvoy.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card (formerly the SPG Luxury Card, tier 4) and the Marriott Bonvoy Business card are now both offering a 100k point sign up bonus for $5000 in spending in the first three months of card membership. This deal will be available until April 24th. The old SPG Amex card (tier 3) which has been re-branded the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is no longer available to new applicants, but current card holders will be grandfathered in to the card and will receive a new card design.

Amex has some complex and sometimes confusing language regarding eligibility for bonuses in its terms and conditions. Not only will having certain Marriott cards restrict you from getting a welcome bonus on the Bonvoy Amex cards, but also Amex will even consider how many cards you have and whether they believe you are gaming the system or not and can make a decision accordingly as to whether to give you a bonus. Luckily American Express has now introduced a tool that will tell you as you complete your application if they are not going to give you a bonus and give you the option to proceed or cancel, in which case you won’t have wasted a hard pull.

So we recommend checking the terms and conditions for the card you want before you do the application and if there is any confusion Amex will actually tell you whether you are eligible for a bonus before your application goes through.
