The new Centurion lounge at LAX

American Express Centurion Lounges are by far some of the best airport lounges out there, during this time of decreased travel many travellers have been posting photos of themselves enjoying nearly empty Centurion lounges.  But sadly, now the lounges themselves have become the latest victim of the Coronavirus, Amex has announced that all 12 Centurion lounges in the network will close.

In a statement on their website they say:

“As the health and safety of our Card Members and colleagues is our top priority, in light of the spread of COVID-19 we are temporarily closing all The Centurion® Lounge locations, starting on Saturday, March 21, 2020. American Express will provide notice here and on the Amex Mobile App when locations reopen…We look forward to reopening our lounges and welcoming our Card Members back as soon as we can. We appreciate your understanding during this time and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

This was, of course, to be expected, with most restaurants, lounges and similar establishments closing, even if they are not required by law to do so. Many companies see public safety and also their reputation at stake. The closure is even more bitter for the long awaited LAX lounge, which only opened on March 9th and on Saturday will close after just 12 days in service.

If you are interested in Centurion Lounges, The Platinum Card® from American Express, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express provide unlimited access to cardholders, although you will have to wait a few weeks to utilize your benefit (terms apply). So far American Express hasn’t given a re-opening date, but you can check their Centurion Lounge website for updates.
